Conservatives in London have criticised the Labour Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, after breaking his central promise during last years campaign, just 9 months after coming to office.
During the Mayoral Campaign Khan promised “Londoners won’t pay a penny more for their travel in 2020 than they do today” and that he would not increase fares. Yet Londoners who pay for monthly or other travelcards will face a nearly 2% increase. That means a zone 1-3 monthly travelcard now costs nearly £150 and a zone 1-4 monthly travelcard is now over £180.
Chairman of Lewisham Deptford Conservatives, Ross Archer, criticised the Mayor saying; “Sadiq Khan has mislead many with his phoney fares pledge, which is why it has only taking Khan nine months to break it. Most Lewisham residents commute into work and this will be an added cost they have to incur despite a promise by Khan that they wouldn't. This will affect many struggling families in Lewisham, I am fearful that Khan will repeat this betrayal next year and the year after.”
Across the whole of London Sadiq Khan’s broken election pledge is expected to affect 4.5 million hardworking Londoners.
Ross added “I hope that Khan will not break his other pledge to the people of Lewisham in bringing the Bakerloo line extension to the borough. This piece of transport infrastructure is desperately needed and I hope the Mayor recognises this and invests in this key project”.
