Local Conservatives are petitioning against the Labour Mayor of London’s plans to close Catford and Deptford Police stations.
The Mayor is planning to close half of London’s Police Stations, abolish Borough Commanders and threatening to cut Police Numbers below 30,000, despite promising during the election to increase police numbers to 32,000. Earlier this year the Mayor raised council tax claiming the cash would fund new police officers.
Many Safer Neighbourhood Teams use Catford and Deptford police stations as bases and without these stations these teams will find it harder to protect and engage with communities in the South and North of the borough.
Conservative Candidate for Mayor of Lewisham Ross Archer said “Closing these two police stations would leave Lewisham’s police too centralised. Lewisham is a big borough and we need more than one Police station. That’s why we are running this petition
“It is shameless of the Mayor to have promised extra police officers, to have raised council tax claiming this would fund extra police officers and now to threaten to cut the number of police officers. We deserve better”.
